GMC Sierra Transmission and Drivetrain Issues

May 7, 2026 Manufacturers & Defects, Vehicle Types

GMC Sierra transmission and drivetrain problems can lead to unsafe driving conditions and costly repairs. Learn common issues, symptoms, and when your truck may qualify under lemon law.The GMC Sierra has developed a reputation for serious transmission and drivetrain problems, particularly in trucks equipped with GM’s 8-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions. Owners across multiple model years have filed hundreds of complaints with the NHTSA reporting various kinds of issues, including harsh shifting and shuddering at highway speeds. GM has issued recalls and has already faced class action litigation over these defects as well.

Continue reading for the information Sierra owners should know about these issues and when California’s lemon law may apply.

Most Common Transmission and Drivetrain Problems

NHTSA complaints and owner reports reveal a clear pattern of recurring issues in the GMC Sierra’s drivetrain. The problems that come up most often include:

  • Erratic shifting between gears
  • Shuddering and vibration during light acceleration and highway cruising
  • Delayed response when the driver presses the accelerator
  • Transmission slipping
  • Sudden activation of “limp mode,” limiting the vehicle to low speeds without warning
  • Valve body failures in the 10-speed transmission
  • Torque converter problems leading to rough shifts

GM recalled over 460,000 trucks and SUVs in late 2024 alone over a transmission control valve defect that could lock the rear wheels during operation. Many owners have also reported that replacement parts for these transmissions are on national backorder, leaving their trucks undrivable for weeks or months at a time.

When Can These Problems Lead to a Lemon Law Claim?

Not every transmission hiccup qualifies your Sierra as a lemon. However, if your vehicle has spent substantial time in the shop and has yet to be fixed, there’s at least a chance you have a claim worth pursuing. Here are some of the primary factors that will need to be addressed:

  • The defect is covered by GM’s factory warranty
  • The problem substantially affects the truck’s safety, value, or your ability to use it
  • The dealer has had a reasonable number of chances to fix it and the issue persists
  • Your truck has spent 30 or more total days out of service for warranty repairs

The sooner you take legal action, the better. Recent changes to the law have adjusted the statute of limitations for lemon law claims in California. In most cases, you now have just one year from the date your warranty expires, up to a maximum of six years from when the vehicle was purchased, to file a claim.
