Nissan Altima CVT Transmission Problems

Jun 10, 2026 Manufacturers & Defects

The Nissan Altima has earned a reputation as one of the most problematic vehicles on the road when it comes to its continuously variable transmission. According to NHTSA records, the Altima generates more CVT-related complaints than any other model in Nissan’s lineup. Owners across multiple generations of the vehicle have reported total transmission failure well before the vehicle hit 100,000 miles, among other kinds of transmission problems. The issue as a whole has prompted Nissan to extend its powertrain warranty on certain model years and led to multiple class-action settlements as well.

If your Altima has been back to the dealer multiple times for the same CVT issue and the problem still hasn’t been resolved, you may have a valid lemon law claim under California law.

Which Altima Model Years Are Most Affected?

CVT transmission problems in the Altima go back well over a decade, but the issue hasn’t gone away with newer models. The model years most relevant for current lemon law claims include:

  • 2017-2018 models, which were the subject of a separate class-action lawsuit after owners reported persistent shuddering, hesitation, and power loss tied to the CVT
  • 2019-2020 models are facing their own legal challenges. A class-action lawsuit alleges ongoing CVT defects that cause stalling and shuddering, suggesting the redesign didn’t fully resolve the underlying issues
  • 2021 and newer models, where isolated but recurring CVT complaints continue to surface in NHTSA filings. Owners have reported jerking at low speeds, delayed acceleration, and unexpected loss of power

If your Altima is still under its manufacturer’s warranty or was recently purchased and already showing transmission problems, those are exactly the circumstances California’s lemon law was designed to address.

Your Rights Under California’s Lemon Law

California’s Song-Beverly Act, which contains the lemon law, protects consumers who purchase or lease vehicles that turn out to have unfixable warranty defects. If your Altima’s CVT problem is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty and the dealership hasn’t been able to resolve it after a reasonable number of attempts, your vehicle may qualify as a lemon. A qualifying claim can result in:

  • A full refund of the purchase price, including your down payment, monthly payments, taxes, and fees
  • A replacement vehicle of comparable value
  • A negotiated cash settlement that allows you to keep the vehicle

The fact that Nissan has acknowledged CVT issues through warranty extensions and lawsuit settlements does not prevent you from filing an individual lemon law claim. If anything, that history works in your favor by establishing a documented pattern of defects across the model line. The key question is whether your specific vehicle has gone through enough failed repair attempts to meet the legal standard.
